The incident occurred in Orange County around 10 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 25, in the westbound lane of Route 17 in Goshen.
According to New York State Police, the driver of a pickup truck was driving eastbound in the westbound lane of the highway when it slammed into a tractor-trailer.
The impact caused both vehicles to catch fire, killing one of the drivers, said Trooper Steven Nevel.
Following the crash, both sides of Route 17 were closed to traffic as the fires burned. Nevel said that the highway has been reopened after an investigation.
Nevel added that police are still working on identifying the victims and putting together the sequence of events.
